An atom is the smallest unit of ordinary matter that forms a chemical element. Every solid, liquid, gas, and plasma is composed of neutral or ionized atoms. Atoms are extremely small, typically around 100 picometers across.

 

Different Kinds of Atoms

 

    Description. Atoms are made of tiny particles called protons, neutrons and electrons.

    Stable. Most atoms are stable.

    Isotopes. Every atom is a chemical element, like hydrogen, iron or chlorine.

    Radioactive. Some atoms have too many neutrons in the nucleus, which makes them unstable.

    Ions.

    Antimatter.

 

Many atoms consist of a positively charged nucleus consisting of protons and neutrons surrounded by a cloud of electrons charged negatively. An atom is any particle of matter at its most basic level which contains at least one proton. Here are some examples of the atoms: hydrogen (H) neon (Ne).

 

All atoms are basically the same. All atoms of the same element are exactly alike; however, the atoms of a different element will differ from other elements. With the exception of hydrogen, all atoms have three main parts. The parts of an atom are protons, electrons, and neutrons.

 

Germs certainly meet that criteria. Of course, germs are tiny and impossible to see without some tool to amplify our senses, BUT they are huge compared to the atoms that make up those germs. Those atoms are also matter and are even smaller and harder to see than germs.

 

Particles with no charge are also contained in the nucleus of the atom. They too have a mass of 1amu. The nucleus has an overall positive charge as it contains the protons. Every atom has no overall charge (neutral).
